Imagine that you’re walking along the street and suddenly you see a headless human standing on the sidewalk. That’s how this photo makes a treehugger feel. “Topping” a tree to prune it is like getting a haircut from Freddy Krueger. The outcome of indiscriminately whacking the “head” off of a tree is that the tree panics and puts energy into growing a new noggin. But the attachments that result between the many suckering (or “epicormic”) branches and the larger limbs can be weak. So guess what can happen as the new branches get heavier, and the wind starts to blow or the ice begins to form? Right. NOT rocket science, people. This residential development in Inman Park has introduced decay throughout the crown of this tree, and risked nutrient stress, sun damage, insect and pathogen infestation, and unadulterated ugliness. There IS an approved method for reducing the height of a tree under power lines. But topping ain’t it. So, how would you like it if someone decapitated you? Did you know that topping a tree in Atlanta is always deemed an illegal destruction of that tree and exposes you to a hefty fine? Those are the questions I’d like to ask managers at this company. Male cones on a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Most pine species are monoecious, i.e., both male and female. The female cones — the ones you think of when you hear the phrase “pine cone” — are typically located nearer the top of the tree, and these pollen-producing male cones lower down. Wind carries most of the pollen grains from one pine to other pine trees, with the result that there is comparatively little self-pollination. Some conifers have other means of avoiding self-pollination, e.g., individual trees stagger the development of male and female cones, and because the reproductive schedule of the trees in the vicinity of one another varies, cross-pollination is the result. I took this photo along the @atlantabeltline, and it occurred to me once again that we spend most of our lives passing right by some really amazing and beautiful sights. One of the challenges we each have is how to make the familiar new. Just imagine that you’d traveled to a different planet where you saw this cluster of pollen cones — it would probably strike you as bizarre and even mysterious. A redwood tree does that work of defamiliarization for us, by virtue of its immense size. The new owners of my childhood home had every right to remove the trees on the lot, but it does give me the perfect opportunity to write about tree aversion. Fear of trees and impatience with them are understandable. The probability that a tree will injure or even kill you is very remote, true, but not zero. The expense and hassle of dealing with fallen leaves, broken limbs, and dripping sap are very real. I’m sure you see the problem, though. It’s the free rider problem. We all benefit from the willingness of each person to conserve and replace trees. The planet will die without them. BUT my individual decision to cut down a few of the world’s 3 trillion trees doesn’t matter enough to anyone to really notice. To put it differently, as long as the rest of you conquer your fear of a falling tree and are willing to rake your leaves, I myself can cut all of my trees down and kick back with a cold beer. We can only save the world and ourselves through some kind of collective action. And yet it’s not illogical to think that, for example, my protest vote or my decision not to vaccinate my child or my tiny bit of pollution doesn’t matter, in the grand scheme of things.
